Council of Florence proclaims union with the Greek church

On 6 July 1439 Eugene IV's council issues Laetentur caeli, in which Byzantine delegates accept the Filioque and papal primacy. Byzantium hoped for aid against the Ottomans, but most Greek clergy rejected the union.
