Death of Princess Diana

1997NotableContested

Diana, Princess of Wales, dies with Dodi Fayed and driver Henri Paul when their car crashes in a Paris tunnel while pursued by photographers. Her death sets off an enormous public outpouring of grief.

Contested history

Consensus: French and British investigations and a 2008 London inquest found the crash was caused by the grossly negligent driving of Henri Paul, who had been drinking, and of the pursuing vehicles.

Driver error and the pursuitEstablished
The inquest jury returned a verdict of unlawful killing by grossly negligent driving and noted no one in the rear wore a seatbelt.
Murder by British intelligence or the royal familyDebunked
The Metropolitan Police's Operation Paget and the inquest rejected it; the coroner said there was no evidence.
A white Fiat Uno was involvedEstablished
Paint traces show the car clipped a Fiat Uno whose driver was never conclusively identified; this does not change the finding on the cause.
