Epic of Sundiata

c. 1300Notable

An oral epic of the Mande people of West Africa, kept by griots, about the exiled prince Sundiata Keita who founded the Mali Empire c. 1235. It was first widely published in 1960 from a griot's telling.

The story

The Epic of Sundiata is the founding story of the Mali Empire, told for centuries in the Mande world of West Africa by griots (jeli), hereditary singers, historians and advisers. Its hero is Sundiata Keita, the son of a king of Manden, who is born unable to walk and is mocked for it, until he bends an iron rod and rises to his feet. Exiled after his father's death, he returns with an army, defeats the sorcerer-king Soumaoro Kante of the Sosso at the Battle of Kirina, around 1235, and founds an empire.

The epic is an oral work, performed with a kora or balafon, and every telling is slightly different; there is no single original. It was not written down until the 20th century, notably by Djibril Tamsir Niane, who published a French version in 1960, from the telling of a griot, Mamadou Kouyate of Guinea; an English translation followed in 1965 as Sundiata: An Epic of Old Mali. Historians treat it carefully: it preserves real names, such as Sundiata and Soumaoro, and a main event, the rise of Mali, but is also myth and praise-poetry shaped by later griots.

Why it mattered

  • It preserves, in oral form, the history and the origin myth of the Mali Empire and Mande political ideals.
  • It became a model case for scholars studying how oral traditions keep history.
  • Niane's 1960 edition helped bring African oral epic into world literature and school curricula.
