Gaddafi seizes power in Libya

1969

Colonel Muammar Gaddafi leads a coup against King Idris and rules Libya until he is killed in 2011.

The story

On September 1, 1969, young army officers of the Free Officers Movement seized radio stations and key points in Tripoli and Benghazi and announced the end of the Libyan monarchy. The elderly King Idris was in Turkey for medical treatment and was deposed in his absence. The coup was almost bloodless, and its leader, a 27-year-old captain named Muammar Gaddafi, soon promoted himself to colonel and became the real ruler.

Libya, independent since 1951, was poor until oil was found in 1959. Many Libyans saw the wealth go to a small elite and Western companies, and the king kept British and American bases. Gaddafi, inspired by Nasser's 1952 revolution in Egypt and by Arab nationalism, was also shaped by the Arab defeat in the 1967 war. He removed the foreign bases in 1970, pressed oil companies for better terms, and in 1977 set up the Jamahiriya, 'state of the masses', in practice a one-man government. Libya was linked to the 1988 Lockerbie bombing and faced sanctions. In 2011 rebels rose against him, NATO intervened, and he was killed near Sirte on October 20.

Why it mattered

  • Ended the Libyan monarchy and began 42 years of rule by Gaddafi.
  • Led to the removal of British and American bases and a tougher stance on oil companies.
  • Made Libya a sponsor of militant groups abroad, and led to the Lockerbie bombing and international sanctions.
  • Set up a personalized system of government, with no real institutions, that left a vacuum in 2011.
  • Contributed to Libya's civil wars and division after the 2011 fall of Gaddafi.
