Trung Sisters rise against Han rule

40 CE

Two sisters lead a revolt in the Red River delta against Han Chinese governors and rule for about three years. They become the founding heroines of Vietnamese national memory.

The story

In 40 CE two noblewomen, Trung Trac and Trung Nhi, raised a revolt against Han Chinese rule in Jiaozhi, the Red River delta region that is now northern Vietnam. Traditional accounts say the spark was the execution of Trung Trac's husband, Thi Sach, by the Han governor Su Ting, together with harsh taxes and Chinese control over local lords. Many chiefs joined, and the rebels took the main Han centers. Trung Trac was proclaimed queen and ruled for about three years.

The Han empire had annexed the region after destroying the kingdom of Nam Viet in 111 BCE, and the sisters came from the older Lac aristocracy. In 42 CE the court sent the veteran general Ma Yuan with a large army, and the rebels were beaten in 43 CE. The sisters died, traditionally by drowning themselves rather than surrendering. Chinese rule then tightened and lasted nearly a thousand years, until 938. Details such as the claim that the sisters took 65 citadels come from later tradition, but the revolt is recorded in Chinese histories, and the sisters, called Hai Ba Trung, became the first great figures of Vietnamese resistance.

Why it mattered

  • Resistance to Chinese rule became a central theme of Vietnamese identity, with the sisters as its earliest heroes.
  • Their revolt prompted tighter Han control, showing how Chinese rule shaped Vietnamese society and law.
  • Women's leadership in war gave Vietnam a lasting tradition of honoring female fighters, from temples to modern street names.
  • The memory of the rising fed later revolts that ended with Ngo Quyen's victory at Bach Dang in 938.
